Building Division
The Building Division protects the public health, safety and welfare of the county's residents through enforcement of building codes. Our program is mandated by Florida Statutes (Chapters 553, 489) and it regulates new and proposed construction.
Building codes apply to all aspects of building construction - fire and structural items, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems. They safeguard and ensure uniformity in the construction industry. We operate under the Florida Building Code and its BoCC adopted version in Ordinance 02-01. Our operations involve three stages:
Building Permit Applications for building construction from licensed building contractors are accepted by Development Service Specialists, after they determine through pre-application screening that the project and the property are in compliance with the Alachua County Land Development Regulations Code.
Building Permits are issued after state Certified Building Plans Examiners review building plans to ensure compliance with the Florida Building Code and with Fire and Life Safety Codes as reviewed by the Alachua County Fire Marshall's office.
State Certified Building Inspectors perform daily inspections of the construction process, enforcing the Florida Building Code, until the building is complete and a Certificate of Occupancy (CO) can be issued.
